You also need wiring, a solar collector, piping, and a PV module. A 12VDC panel should be strong enough to power your pump.

Making Your Own Collector

This project has you make your own collector out of black, plastic landscape tubing. If your collector gets broken, you can fix your collector in a jiffy, which can’t be said for commercially available collectors. Combine your collector with a PV-driven submersible pump system (see the preceding section), and you can have a very effective solar pool-heating system for a very cheap price. And you can do it all yourself!

First, gather your tools and materials:

Black, plastic landscape tubing: For $30, you can get a 1,000' roll of 1/4" tubing, which yields around 21 square feet of collector.

Junctions: When you buy the tubing, get junctions that fit the tubing. You’ll need to go from the tubing to an interface for the pump, and because there are so many different kinds of pumps, you’re on your own.

Mounting hardware: Where are you going to locate your collector? If on a roof, think through how you’re going to mount it so that wind and weather won’t cause problems. Once again, you will need to get creative here.
